Deer Valley Resort to be Acquired by Newly Formed Resort Company and Joined with Intrawest, Mammoth Resorts, and Squaw Valley Ski Holdings

New Company’s portfolio increases from 12 four-season mountain resorts to 13
with the addition of iconic Utah resort

The newly formed entity controlled by affiliates of KSL Capital Partners, LLC and Henry Crown and Company that in July joined Intrawest Resorts Holdings, Inc., Mammoth Resorts and Squaw Valley Ski Holdings today announced, with Deer Valley Resort, that they have entered into a definitive agreement for the newly formed entity to acquire Deer Valley Resort.  Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.  The transaction is subject to certain closing conditions and is anticipated to close prior to the upcoming 2017-18 ski season.

“Deer Valley Resort is one of the preeminent mountain resorts in the world and is a tremendous addition to our existing portfolio.  Prior to this acquisition, we were able to offer our guests exceptional experiences throughout most of North America’s major ski regions, but we did not have a resort in Utah, a state that is renowned for great skiing and mountain town life.  Park City and Salt Lake skiers have always known that powder, blue skies, a huge variety of terrain, and exemplary guest service have always set Deer Valley Resort apart,” said David Perry, president and chief operating officer of the new joint venture. “We could not be more pleased that Deer Valley Resort will be part of our new company, and we look forward to working with the staff and Park City community to carry on the traditions that make it so special,” added Mr. Perry.

“We are thrilled to join this impressive portfolio with 12 other resorts and are excited about the opportunities this transaction will create for our guests, staff, and the community of Park City.  Deer Valley is a special place and being part of its growth has been one of the great joys of my life,” said Bob Wheaton, president and general manager.  “Joining this portfolio of resorts will enable Deer Valley to build upon its outstanding traditions and further enhance our ability to provide our guests with a world class skiing experience. I look forward to working with them as we develop our vision for the future of the resort and the new company.”

Season Passes

For the full 2017-18 winter season, Deer Valley will continue to honor the existing pass products that are currently on sale.

I wish that there was a way to take a vote to put all of us at ease about the possibility of allowing snow boarders in the future. Overwhelming consensus amongst every skier over 24 years is that is one of THE best things about skiing DV…no snow boarders.

  2. Jim W. says:

Deer Valley is a singular skiing experience. Skiers ONLY, with limited access and the best grooming (& truly the best of everything).

If we were interested in multi-resort passes or those other resorts, we’d go there.

Deer Valley stands alone because at its core it does stand alone, it is, what it is, because it is different and those differences are what makes it special.

DV has provided so many great memories that when the time comes, my children will place my ashes on Bald Mt. (and they’ll keep coming back with the grandkids!)

  23. Jennifer B says:

Deer Valley is a very special place to ski and I sincerely hope the acquisition won’t change this. Most important are that (1) it is one of the only places in the country where snowboarding isn’t allowed, and (2) Deer Valley caps the number of people who can ski on a given day. Although we pay a premium for it, this means that skiers can be assured of safe skiing (especially great for beginners and kids), and minimal lift lines even in peak season. Add to this the great food, exceptional service, ski valets, free parking, and terrific grooming, and you get an experience that is worth the premiums we pay to ski here. Like many of the other commenters, these unique aspects are why we keep coming back to ski every year and why we recently purchased a second home in Park City. I truly hope you can find a way to maintain these unique elements and that Deer Valley won’t become just another crowded ski area with long lines and snowboarders whizzing by.

It would be very helpful if you could publish more of a commitment to maintain these elements in the long term.

It would also be helpful if you can give any updated timelines/plans with respect to the Mayflower expansion and what it will mean for the resort.

  26. Steve Westing says:

One thing you are hearing from your loyal guests is their willingness to pay more to get less (people). This more than anything is what sets Deer Valley apart. As a 15 year PC local and many year DV season pass holder this is my most prized attribute of DV. As a family we pay more than $5,000 a year in season pass tickets when we could be getting local PCMR epic pass season tickets for less than $2,000. We’ve shelled out this $3,000 “premium” precisely to buy a low-crowd environment.

If this new conglomerate is heading towards an “Epic Me-Too” program across a system of resorts this will crush your major differentiator even if you keep DV ski-only and off course keep up your great food, guest services, ski corral, etc.

So, my vote is to keep paying more to get less.

What happens to the Royal Street Land Co property holdings in BCC?

  44. Ann Mennel says:

We echo sentiments expressed by others on the board. Our priorities remain as they have for 29 years of skiing at Deer Valley — NO SNOWBOARDING, LIMITED SKIERS ON THE MOUNTAIN, TOP SKI INSTRUCTORS, HIGHEST QUALITY FOOD AND LODGING. We hope these priorities will remain the same, as you have suggested in your comments, but wanted to add to the list of growing concern by frequent visitors.

  45. Charlie Minter says:

I know I’m piling on but it would be a shame to see the DV brand go by the wayside due to this merger. Hoping you keep it the pure skiers resort we have grown to love. Charlie and Kathy Minter, Destin, FL

  46. Tom Ferry says:

Still don’t understand the Aspen connection/ no connection.

  47. Ruby Diaz says:

This marks the death of Deer Valley as we know it. Deer Valley has always been about the excellence of the guests’ experiences, a.k.a. “The Deer Valley Difference “, often at the expense of maximizing profits. Despite words to the contrary, it’s likely that Deer Valley will morph into yet another corporate, bottom-line first entity while the guests and employees become an afterthought.
RIP Deer Valley; we’ll always have our memories.

  48. Ken Burger says:

Turkey chili and no snow borders! Keep those two commitments and our Texas family will keep flying over Colorado to ski Deer Valley.

  49. bob braun says:

I have been skiing deer valley as a season pass holder for more than 20 years am sorry to hear that deer valley is being sold. in my experience, despite assurances that no changes are planned, things always change and not for the better. I hold out hope that it will continue to be a SKIER ONLY resort and not permit snowboarders. it is probably unlikely that deer valley will continue for more than a season or two to ban snowboarding, but I will hold out hope.
one benefit could be offering reciprocal season pass benefits at other portfolio resorts such as aspen, snowmass, steamboat, etc., the way vail does.
again, please continue to keep deer valley uniquely SKIER ONLY. if this unique quality is lost, I we would have to move to vail/pcmr.

  50. LANE STEPHENSON says:

We all would feel a lot better if you replace the words, “at this time” to “snowboarders will be banned indefinitely and we will forever limit passes sold”. Otherwise this, “at this time” could be changed tomorrow. However all the stopping on Carpenter and Quincy last year got annoying.
