6 Outdoor Activities to Do with the Kids at Deer Valley Resort

Planning your family’s summer vacation can be hard when you are struggling to manage a variety of age levels, interests, and abilities. If getting outside and finding adventure is your inspiration, then Park City’s Deer Valley Resort may be the perfect answer. And if you stay two or more nights in a two-bedroom or larger condominium you can get 20% off your entire stay plus a $100 Deer Valley Mountain Activities Card. (*Package is valid June 15 – September 3, 2018. Minimum night stay is required and varies by property.)

While Deer Valley® may be best known for its world-class skiing, all the reasons that make this resort a winter hotspot also translate into summer fun. Deer Valley’s snow-covered winter views become a stunning, green mountain landscape in the summer and instead of skis, the lifts haul bikes up the mountain for riding on nearly 70 miles of open trails. There’s hiking and paddleboarding, and music, and the food, well it’s still as tasty whether it’s cold outside or not. And not unlike skiing in the wintertime, the resort offers lessons, classes, and adventures for all ages and ability levels over the summer, so you can be sure to find something that suits each person in your crew.

Here are six such adventures to inspire outdoor fun for each of the kids you have in tow.

1. Mountain Biking

The Mountain Bike School will have your kids happily crushing the trails in no time.

Kids can learn to rip along downhill mountain bike trails, through Deer Valley’s Mountain Bike School. Little rippers ages 9 and up are welcome, and are taught the basics of correct stance, braking, and cornering by expert coaches. Once they’ve nailed the skills area, kids and coaches ride a chairlift up and learn to master riding along the trails. Before you know it, they’ll be begging you to take them on Tsunami.

2. Summer Adventure Camp

While you mountain bike Deer Valley Resort or visit Park City, keep the tykes entertained at a day camp promising all the fun of summer camp without overnighting. From getting crafty with art projects to bouldering on the climbing wall, there’s plenty to do indoors before venturing outside into nature’s playground. Outside, kids hike Deer Valley’s trails, ride bikes, and explore the mountains on scavenger hunts. Occasional off-site field trips let kiddos experience Utah’s best outdoor pools, waterparks, and aquarium. The camp is perfect for children ages 2 months to 12 years, and has distinct play areas for each group. Camp is in session from June 12 through August 23 and you can choose from one, three, or five-day sessions. Camp is based out of Snow Park Lodge.

3. Stand-up Paddleboarding

Learning to paddleboard is a great new way to get your waterbabies out on the lake.

Balancing on a stand-up paddleboard isn’t as tricky as it looks—if conditions are right. Deer Valley’s Pebble Beach is a mountain paddling oasis, and an ideal place for kids to learn the sport, thanks to its quiet, wave-free waters. Take a lesson or get a rental from Park City SUP’s on-water shop, or if your kids are waterbabies, sign them up for a multi-day summer SUP camp. They’ll master proper paddling technique and learn how paddleboards work while competing in on-board races, practicing downward dog in paddleboard yoga, and going two-by-two on a tandem.

4. Swimming at the Hotel Pools

No matter the vacation, pooltime is always a favorite for mini vacationers. Delight your kids by staying at family-friendly properties like the rustic-chic Silver Baron Lodge, known for its outdoor heated pool with waterslide. Or choose the condo-style accommodations and welcoming outdoor pool at Lodges at Deer Valley, which also features bonuses like free afternoon cookies and complimentary rides into Park City.

A luxurious family favorite is Montage Deer Valley, where kids get a free stuffed animal upon check-in and s’mores with homemade marshmallows every evening. Lay out at the picturesque outdoor pool set against Deer Valley’s peaks and watch your teens play a pickup game of aqua basketball with new friends.

5. Kid-friendly Outdoor Concerts at Deer Valley Music Festival

If your little ones love Disney, mark your calendars for July 6, pack a picnic and bring the whole family for a night under the stars at Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater.

Tiny tots will revel in the magic of Disney under starry skies as animated favorites and talented singers perform popular songs backed by the Utah Symphony as movie scenes play.

6. Hiking and Scenic Chairlift Rides

Get a bird’s eye view of Deer Valley from the lifts and explore nature up close along the trails.

Take the family on a summer lift ride above Deer Valley’s forested mountains and world-class ski runs. At the top, follow one of the winding hiking paths back to base, stopping for lunch on the sunny deck of mid-mountain eatery, Royal Street Café.

If your family is up for the challenge of hiking up the mountain instead, the 2.6-mile Ontario Canyon Trail is a foot-traffic-only option that keeps you separated from mountain bikers whizzing by. Pass blooming wildflowers and a snowmaking pond as you wander through the lush, forested terrain. When you reach the top and the kids are exhausted, take a free ride back to the base on the Sterling Express chairlift.
